The following press release from The Nation newspaper from October 2018 summarizes a major problem faced by the government of Malawi in its quest for development of the oil and gas sector. It is clear that a lack of trained manpower in the sector is crippling efforts to kick-start the industry.
Despite government promising to support the growth of the mining sector to become one of the main foreign exchange earners, the department tasked to look after the oil and gas sector seems to have no capacity and resources to perform, according to a recent report…
The report says technical officers at the Department of Mines do not have continuous trainings to ensure independent and competent analysis when conducting field verification visits where oil and gas companies are operating…
The report has recommended a review of the oil and gas division to allow all technical officers to access relevant training and capacity building programmes (Chirambo, 2018).

Computer science is a major source of technological innovation through the development of new software and computer applications, often leading to entrepreneurial activity. For this reason the Computer Science programme at Unicaf University incorporates modules on management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and an introduction to e-business. Graduates of the programme are therefore in a position to engage with the management and business side of the ICT sector, as well as the technical side of ICT, and have a starting point to launch their own business should they so wish.

The Unicaf University BSc programme in Computer Science consists of 20 modules, each contributing 24 credits to the final qualification. Aim of the programme

The aim of Unicaf University’s Bachelor of Arts programme in Business Administration is to develop the students’ intellectual capacity, executive personality, and managerial skills in a way that enables them to assume entry-level managerial positions in business and industry and other organizations, and to enable them to initiate entrepreneurial business ventures.

The structured online approach provides a unique self-directed learning experience for the student and promotes a practical application of the learning generated through the programme.

The online nature of the programme facilitates the ability of people in full-time employment to access the programme, while remaining accessible to individuals who wish to be full time students.

The programme is an online programme composed of 8 taught modules of 25 credits each, of which five are core modules and three are elective modules relating to a specialist stream, culminating in a research based dissertation of 40 credits. The modules may be taken continuously on a full-time basis or spread over a longer period on a part-time basis, depending on the circumstances and needs of the student. Each taught module lasts for seven weeks and the material is available online 24 hours per day, seven days per week during that period. The student may opt to supplement the online taught modules during this period with face-to-face tutorials in a blended approach. The research is supervised by a PhD-qualified tutor within a structured format over a period of 14 weeks, resulting in a dissertation that is both internally and externally examined.

During the taught modules students interact virtually with their tutor and fellow class students. The number of students taking any one module is limited to 30, thus encouraging personalised interaction and sharing of knowledge and experiences among students from a diverse background.

The module material and e-library access is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week for the duration of the modules and for the entire period of the dissertation, through a purpose-designed Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The Unicaf University Malawi PhD in Information Technology is an integrated programme awarded on the basis of a research dissertation (240 credits) and also incorporates a preparatory taught element (120 credits) that provides students with the necessary tools to undertake their research, appreciate current research issues in the field of Information Technology, and assume future leadership roles in their respective institutions. It is the field of focus of the dissertation (67% of total credits), rather than that of the taught modules (33% of total credits) which imparts the name “Information Technology” to the qualification.

The aim of the B.Ed. in Primary Education is to train new teachers to a high standard so that they may in turn teach their pupils to a high standard and positively contribute to their school and communities. The aim is further to train new teachers in such large numbers that they make a significant impact on meeting the targets of access and quality of Primary Education outlined in MIP-1 (National Planning Commission, 2021b) and NESIP (Government of Malawi, 2020).

Law is taught from a range of perspectives, based on the finest traditions of legal education and recent innovations for the 21st century. Our approach is to examine law well beyond basic legal rules and legal institutions, taking account of wider contexts and discourses that allow deeper understanding of law in society. With this approach, the University of Suffolk provides students with a firm grounding in the subject of law and the contexts in which law functions. This course is designed to develop specialists in the management of multidisciplinary organisations in the construction industry, who can apply theory into practice and have the capability to work in an international environment.

The aim is to maximise students’ skills and knowledge in areas of Construction and Engineering, such as Project Management, Information Communication Technology, Construction Law, Supply chain Management, Procurement and to develop a critical awareness of the issues and challenges in Construction Engineering Management.

Designed to develop knowledge and research skills in Data Science, an understanding of the ecology within which a Data Scientist operates and professional skills in Data Science techniques, the programme also fosters reflective and analytic approaches in work-based practice and research.

Graduates are expected to be able to analyse and critically evaluate projects and research outputs in Data Science, and to have a critical understanding of the data value chain in professional settings.

The programme focuses on developing skills in the field of information security and digital forensics, through a mixture of theory, advanced practical skills and experience. Upon successful completion of this programme, students are expected to have a critical understanding of the concepts of information security, of the procedures and techniques employed when investigating computer incidents and computer misuse and to be able to contribute to the development of related disciplines by research solutions.

The MSc in Psychology has a strong emphasis on psychological investigation and exploring ethical issues. The primary goal of psychology as a discipline is to contribute to the scientific understanding of mind, brain, behaviour, and experience and of the complex interactions between these. The programme will develop knowledge and understanding of scientific endeavour and the role of empirical evidence in the development of theory relating to human behaviour. An improvement in population health is increasingly recognized internationally as a key element of economic and social development and nowhere is this more evident than in emerging countries with growing economies. This course provides a broad-based understanding of health and its social and environmental determinants with a curriculum informed by key international strategies, the Sustainable Development Goals and the Social Determinants of Health. The focus of this programme is to facilitate the development of public health practitioners; to enhance their knowledge and skills required for public health practice in their local setting. In addition, to develop a public health mindset and approach which is relevant to their role and country. LMIC’s are increasingly challenged with a double burden of disease; whilst still fighting infectious diseases they are now increasingly faced with the growth in non- communicable diseases (NCD’s). Tackling these burdens require a robust evidence base built on sound research, surveillance and intelligence; policy and strategic approaches based on the evidence; health protection measures and health promotion activities at the community level.
