Background

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a focus on Health Management is introduced targeting individuals in both the private and public health sectors and aims at equipping senior health managers and health administrators with leaderships skills and competences that will enable them to manage their private sector businesses, or public national, regional, district and local health systems and institutions successfully.
The Government of Malawi has adopted a strategy for development and growth spanning 2017-2022. This is the Malawi Growth & Development Strategy III (MGDS III). This blueprint recognizes that failure of the country to move to a developmental state has slowed down national socio-economic development, making Malawi a consuming and importing state with very little being invested into industry, technology and private sector activities to promote manufacturing and export growth.
According to MGDS III, the plan for spurring growth recognizes provision of education and skills as key to providing the human capital required for socio-economic development and industrial growth. Unicaf University Malawi aims to play a part in the national effort to increase accessibility to tertiary education in general. Its online model, combined with its scholarship scheme makes high quality tertiary education accessible to a much large number of students than could be absorbed in a traditional face-to-face setting. Unicaf, therefore meets the goal of availing tertiary education to as many Malawians as possible. More particularly, the MBA in Health Management programme will contribute towards the realization of the national vision for socio-economic development as outlined by the rationale below.

Rationale for the Programme
Health is one of the most important industries in society. Hospitals, pharmaceutical groups, medical and biotechnology companies, insurers, research centers, government and non-profit organizations, start-ups and many more stakeholders are looking for well-qualified leaders who understand the complexity and the big picture of the health sector and its market.
One of the four pillars for the implementation of the national blueprint for economic growth and poverty alleviation, the Malawi Growth & Development Strategy (MGDS) III, is “human capital development” (Government of Malawi, 2017). It is in response to the call by government for increased private sector involvement in the field of education and training that Unicaf University, in general, develops its programmes.
In particular, this online MBA programme with specialization in Health Management was developed with a view to providing the skilled manpower needed to support the expected demand for expanded and improved health management that will be required to meet the needs of a growing population and a growing economy. Business managers, and also associated entrepreneurs, are critical in both public and private health sector organizations such as in healthcare, pharmaceuticals or medical supplies
Aim of the Programme

This programme aims to equip students with integrative thinking, combining intuition, analytic reasoning and imagination, and link it with core competencies and transformational leadership capabilities to become a successful leader in health management. This programme aims to be relevant to professionals both outside the health industry, for example executive managers, and inside the health industry, for example doctors and nurses, who wish to apply their learning and experience to health management through the acquisition of practical health management skills.

Background

The BA in Economics and Business offers its students expertise in Business and Economics. It provides them with an ability to demonstrate knowledge of business processes. It allows them to assess industry attractiveness and identify risks and opportunities of doing business in a global environment by choosing and applying appropriate methodologies. It prepares students for careers in business and finance, but can also be relevant for Government and non-Governmental Organizations. In particular graduates will be able to apply economic analyses within a business context.

The Government of Malawi has adopted a strategy for development and growth spanning 2017-2022. This is the Malawi Growth & Development Strategy III (MGDS III) (Government of Malawi, 2017). This blueprint recognizes the failure of the country to develop competitively, resulting in Malawi becoming a consuming and importing nation, with very limited investment in industry, technology and private sector activities that promote manufacturing and export-led growth.

More particularly, the MBA Finance programme will contribute towards the realization of the national vision for growth and development as outlined by the rationale below

Programme Rationale

In today’s business world, organizations are aiming to gain competitive advantage over competitors in an ever-changing business environment. Business leaders therefore require, at a minimum, skills that span across the entire spectrum of business. These skills include quantitative techniques, operations management, marketing, finance and economics, organizational behavior, project management, decision making skills and a host of other business knowledge areas. Today’s business leaders should also be competent in new technologies that create new information about customers and business processes. Modern business skills, coupled with modern technologies, are transforming the way businesses operate and are enabling organizations to shape new business models. Therefore, there is a growing demand for business leaders and entrepreneurs that can understand and make use of these newfound breakthroughs in order to gain competitive advantage in the market place.

With the foregoing in mind, Unicaf University Malawi’s Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Business is designed to develop entry level business leaders that will become successful entrepreneurs locally and globally in this digital era. There is a strong international focus to the programme to provide students with as broad a perspective as possible of current business trends and economic theory. The modules in this programme are designed to encourage students to explore key theories through case studies and critical discussion.

Aim of the Programme

The aim of the bachelor degree program in Economics and Business is to train open-minded graduates who are internationally focused. The course provides solid, basic, general preparation in the most important economic fields and offers an excellent introduction to the fields of economics and business.

Background

A Bachelor of Science in Accounting provides an understanding of perspectives that form the context for business and financial management. The BSc Accounting is a rigorous programme that prepares students for professional accountancy roles and business and public sector management roles. It will equip students with a strong accounting foundation and the necessary accounting skills, as well as teaching the theory and logic behind the use of specific accounting techniques and accounting decision-making. Students are expected to think analytically and to critically evaluate key issues in accounting from a variety of perspectives. They are also expected to apply the analytical accounting approaches.

The Government of Malawi has adopted a strategy for development and growth spanning 2017-2022. This is the Malawi Growth & Development Strategy III (MGDS III) (Government of Malawi, 2017). Unicaf University, therefore meets the goal of availing tertiary education to as many Malawians as possible. More particularly, the BSc in Accounting programme will contribute towards the realization of the national vision for growth and development as outlined by the rationale below.

Programme Rationale

The BSc Accounting programme is designed to meet the professional accounting development and training needs of students. The BSc Accounting programme is also designed to educate students on the broader aspects accounting management and the economics of organizations. It includes a strong international element and considers the essential, underlying theory and concepts that are involved in the accounting sector on a global level, exploring accounting procedures in organizations around the world.  As the Malawian economy and other African economies grow, there will be an ever-increasing need for quality accounting and auditing of private sector and public sector institutions and their activities. There is a strong desire for certificate and diploma level accountants to upgrade to degree level as a stepping stone to becoming a Chartered Accountant. This online programme may appeal especially to those potential students who are working and already have experience of accounting and financial management, but do not wish to give up employment to undertake full-time studies. In this way the BSc in Accounting programme, offered by Unicaf University, expands access to students to enable more trained accountants to graduate. It thus, meets the broader societal needs of Malawi, and African countries in general, for greater numbers of skilled accountancy personnel to facilitate socioeconomic development.

Computer science is a rapidly growing field and is, de facto, an essential component of the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

Computer Science is the science, theory and practice of computational applications. Computer scientists communicate with computers through appropriate programming languages and codes and develop the systems and software that enable computers to operate. This requires an understanding of, and an ability to manipulate, algorithms and associated mathematics. Computer science feeds into Information Technology, which centres on the use of computer systems, including their application for network and database design. These information technology aspects are incorporated into the Unicaf University BSc programme so that students have a well-rounded technical skill set for their future career development.

Computer science is a major source of technological innovation through the development of new software and computer applications, often leading to entrepreneurial activity. For this reason the Computer Science programme at Unicaf University incorporates modules on management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and an introduction to e-business. Graduates of the programme are therefore in a position to engage with the management and business side of the ICT sector, as well as the technical side of ICT, and have a starting point to launch their own business should they so wish.

The Unicaf University BSc programme in Computer Science consists of 20 modules, each contributing 24 credits to the final qualification. The programme structure and module composition is outlined in detail in section 4. The online nature of the programme allows it to be accessed by working people as well as full time students.

Course Summary

Law is taught from a range of perspectives, based on the finest traditions of legal education and recent innovations for the 21st century. Our approach is to examine law well beyond basic legal rules and legal institutions, taking account of wider contexts and discourses that allow deeper understanding of law in society. With this approach, the University of Suffolk provides students with a firm grounding in the subject of law and the contexts in which law functions. Equally important is the breadth and depth of education that this subject facilitates. Students will be equipped to take on challenging questions about law and related issues, and to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts. This ethos runs right through all subjects in the law curriculum, which includes a number of modules specifically designed to provide opportunities to apply your knowledge and skills in different contexts.
