“Surveys have strongly indicated that there are thick sediments ranging from 2500 to 3500 m… Exploration work currently being pursued by multinational firms in Malawi’s stretch of the oil rich Great African Rift Valley has unveiled high prospects for oil discovery” (Jere, 2018).
This MBA: Oil, Gas and Energy Management programme is designed to encourage national efforts towards improvement of the energy sector, and hence towards greater industrialization within Malawi.
The following press release from The Nation newspaper from October 2018 summarizes a major problem faced by the government of Malawi in its quest for development of the oil and gas sector. It is clear that a lack of trained manpower in the sector is crippling efforts to kick-start the industry.
Despite government promising to support the growth of the mining sector to become one of the main foreign exchange earners, the department tasked to look after the oil and gas sector seems to have no capacity and resources to perform, according to a recent report…
The report says technical officers at the Department of Mines do not have continuous trainings to ensure independent and competent analysis when conducting field verification visits where oil and gas companies are operating…
The report has recommended a review of the oil and gas division to allow all technical officers to access relevant training and capacity building programmes (Chirambo, 2018).
The last paragraph quoted was the recommendation made in the authoritative Malawi Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (MWEITI) report. The report reinforces the observations of Unicaf University that prompted and justified the development of this MBA: Oil, Gas and Energy Management programme.

It includes a strong international element and considers the essential, underlying theory and concepts that are involved in the accounting sector on a global level, exploring accounting procedures in organizations around the world.  As the Malawian economy and other African economies grow, there will be an ever-increasing need for quality accounting and auditing of private sector and public sector institutions and their activities. There is a strong desire for certificate and diploma level accountants to upgrade to degree level as a stepping stone to becoming a Chartered Accountant. This online programme may appeal especially to those potential students who are working and already have experience of accounting and financial management, but do not wish to give up employment to undertake full-time studies. In this way the BSc in Accounting programme, offered by Unicaf University, expands access to students to enable more trained accountants to graduate. Each taught module lasts for seven weeks and the material is available online 24 hours per day, seven days per week during that period. The student may opt to supplement the online taught modules during this period with face-to-face tutorials in a blended approach. The research is supervised by a PhD-qualified tutor within a structured format over a period of 14 weeks, resulting in a dissertation that is both internally and externally examined.

Computer science is a major source of technological innovation through the development of new software and computer applications, often leading to entrepreneurial activity. For this reason the Computer Science programme at Unicaf University incorporates modules on management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and an introduction to e-business. Graduates of the programme are therefore in a position to engage with the management and business side of the ICT sector, as well as the technical side of ICT, and have a starting point to launch their own business should they so wish.

The Unicaf University BSc programme in Computer Science consists of 20 modules, each contributing 24 credits to the final qualification. The programme structure and module composition is outlined in detail in section 4. The online nature of the programme allows it to be accessed by working people as well as full time students.

Through the VLE, in addition to their module material, students are able to gain instant access to thousands of the latest versions of text-books and journals from Unicaf University’s e-library to support their work. The recommended textbooks and the entire e-library are directly available to the student from their VLE platform at the click of a button. Through the online library help desk, students are able to request for further reading materials that they may need.

Aim of the programme

The aim of Unicaf University’s Bachelor of Arts programme in Business Administration is to develop the students’ intellectual capacity, executive personality, and managerial skills in a way that enables them to assume entry-level managerial positions in business and industry and other organizations, and to enable them to initiate entrepreneurial business ventures.

The structured online approach provides a unique self-directed learning experience for the student and promotes a practical application of the learning generated through the programme.

The online nature of the programme facilitates the ability of people in full-time employment to access the programme, while remaining accessible to individuals who wish to be full time students.

The programme emphasizes sharing of professional experiences with tutors and peers and is particularly relevant to people already employed in the business sector and / or in general administration and management, and wish to enhance their learning through sharing and analyzing their work experience with others in a similar situation.

The programme is an online programme composed of 8 taught modules of 25 credits each, of which five are core modules and three are elective modules relating to a specialist stream, culminating in a research based dissertation of 40 credits. The modules may be taken continuously on a full-time basis or spread over a longer period on a part-time basis, depending on the circumstances and needs of the student. Each taught module lasts for seven weeks and the material is available online 24 hours per day, seven days per week during that period. The student may opt to supplement the online taught modules during this period with face-to-face tutorials in a blended approach. The research is supervised by a PhD-qualified tutor within a structured format over a period of 14 weeks, resulting in a dissertation that is both internally and externally examined.

The Unicaf University Malawi PhD in Information Technology is an integrated programme awarded on the basis of a research dissertation (240 credits) and also incorporates a preparatory taught element (120 credits) that provides students with the necessary tools to undertake their research, appreciate current research issues in the field of Information Technology, and assume future leadership roles in their respective institutions. It is the field of focus of the dissertation (67% of total credits), rather than that of the taught modules (33% of total credits) which imparts the name “Information Technology” to the qualification.

The aim of the B.Ed. in Primary Education is to train new teachers to a high standard so that they may in turn teach their pupils to a high standard and positively contribute to their school and communities. The aim is further to train new teachers in such large numbers that they make a significant impact on meeting the targets of access and quality of Primary Education outlined in MIP-1 (National Planning Commission, 2021b) and NESIP (Government of Malawi, 2020).

Aim of the Programme

This programme aims to equip students with integrative thinking combining intuition, analytical reasoning and imagination, and link it with transformational leadership capabilities including systems approach for them to become successful leaders in public health. The curriculum is designed to help students develop key knowledge, competences and capabilities integrating a range of perspectives relevant to the public health system in which they will be operating.
